Purpose of the meeting
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will host the First meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for the Middle Fork Holston River and Tributaries Cleanup Plan on Thursday September 8, 2022. TAC meetings are open to the public and all interested parties are welcome to attend. The TAC will assist in development of a clean-up plan, also known as Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) to address benthic impairments in the Middle Fork Holston River in Smyth, Wythe and Washington Counties and the tributaries Greenway Creek, Hall Creek, Byers Creek, Cedar Creek, and Tattle Branch in Washington County. These streams have been listed on Virginia’s § 303(d) list of impaired waters for failing to meet Virginia’s water quality standards due to an altered benthic community. This TMDL will update and revise existing TMDLs developed for sediment, which was identified as a probable contributor to the poor health of the stream segments. The TAC meeting will discuss the data and process used in identifying the most likely stressor to the watersheds and solicit feedback on the findings from the watershed stakeholders. The TAC will also review land use data, watershed modeling and sediment loading estimates. This meeting is an opportunity for local residents to learn about the condition of these streams, share information about the area, and become involved in the process of local water quality improvement. Information about this study can be found here: https://www.deq.virginia.gov/water/water-quality/tmdl-development/tmdls-under-development.
