Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

My brother and I attended Virginia public schools all 13 years of Kindergarten through twelfth grade. Our parents were our best teachers in showing us how to love others, make smart decisions, be kind to others, exhibit moral behavior and to be a light in the world. We were raised in a Christian home with God as our moral compass. Now as a parent, my daughter has attended public schools for six years so far. She is sweet, kind, loving and such a gentle spirit. She loves God and her family. I do not want her to be taught about transgender issues, like it just becomes part of the regular curriculum. It is against our religious beliefs and is not how God created us - male or female. Children have young, impressionable minds and should not be taught in a way that can be persuasive for them to be told they can take medication to alter their hormones without their parents knowledge or approval?!?! Heck NO! We are the parents for a reason. We have been entrusted with the responsibility of raising our children and teaching them the difference between what is right or wrong and in our household, if it’s against the word of God, it is wrong! We do not want to pull our child out of public schools because she can be a positive role model to others, but if this “guidance” passes, we will either homeschool or enroll her in a private, Christian school. Please do Not pass this “guidance”!
