Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

Oppose these measures/ Support No Bullying Policies

To be clear bullying and harassment of any student for any reason should be addressed and come with appropriate consequences. I do not support policies that force secular views upon those with opposing religious and ideological views. There is no scientific/psychological consensus concerning gender identity. Genetically speaking there are two distinct genders. Forcing someone to use a different pronoun to identify someone is illegal. It is a violation of our right to free speech. We can address the bullying/harassment without violating freedom of speech. Mandating the removal of confusion by the use  of certain pronouns does not remove the confusion that still exists. Also, we are doing harm  to our children by not addressing these identity issues in a more appropriate counseling session. Children should not be encouraged to make gender identity decisions in adolescence. Adults have enough difficulty understanding the issues. Parents should be responsible for educating their children in this area of their life not the school system. Our school system should be apolitical and educate our children not make decisions for them. By enacting these policies we are in fact making a decision for them and a political statement. Please stop trying to force our children into your ideological box. Racism is wrong. Bullying is wrong. Harassment is wrong. Limiting freedom of speech is wrong. If you really want to help, work in cooperation with the parents of the child who is struggling with their gender identity to get them the help they need or want. Not just counseling from one ideological perspective, but from all perspectives. The antidote to confusion is not less information, but more. That is the challenge of education. We must impart knowledge of all points of view without bias or we are inherently biased. You may not like my point of view, but that doesn't mean you get to dismiss it. The very freedom you purport is the very freedom you deny. We have a pronoun for that which has no identity, "it." No one wants to be called it. Everyone wants to know who they are, their identity. Unfortunately in a pluralistic society with no moral absolutes and no greater source for determining identity and other moral absolutes, we are left to the whim of the day. We are ok with society dictating our moral absolutes as long as they align with what we want from life. What happens when a corrupt society takes charge and there are no longer any moral absolutes. The laws of the land, which are governed by the society will become corrupt because the society determines what is right and wrong. These policies are indications of a much bigger problem in our society. We cannot force political and ideological views on everyone. Our nation is divided because no one from either side is willing to have open healthy debate in the public forum. If my faith can stand on its on merits in the public forum then my faith is blind and misplaced. I am willing to consider your ideas if you are willing to consider mine. We will never make progress without communication. People who are unwilling to debate are are afraid that their ideas are wrong and they can't live with the life they would have to enjoin if their ideas are wrong. Thank you for allowing me to vent.
