The proposed regulation to ban weapons in Government Buildings has the potential to cause more harm than good. Law abiding citizens are rarely the problem when it comes to criminal behavior involving firearms. Laws and regulations like this one are only followed by people with a respect for the law. Crinimals do not follow the law and don't care for human life. The last time I checked murder and drug dealing, are already against the law, yet criminals still commit these crimes. Why do you think they would follow this regulation or law?
To my knowledge, we have never had a shooting in any state agency. This prohibition on those with a concealed handgun permit, some of whom have active and ongoing threats to their lives, is entirely without any justification and needlessly and recklessly endangers innocent lives.
Based on my my understanding, the Governor has no authority for this regulation. If the General Assembly wanted the Governor to have such power, they would have granted it to him explicitly, as is required constitutionally.
This proposed regulation is a solution for which there is no problem. It endangers state employees, law abiding citizens, and the innocent by making state buildings a safe zone for those intent on causing the most damage with the best chance for success.
This regulations should not be approved and the emergency regulation withdrawn.
