Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

YES to cultural competency training

I'm sure if my high school had required cultural competency training, my experience would've been a lot less turbulent. I was constantly forced to defend myself and my right to be taken seriously by teachers simply because of the stereotypes people placed on me. Teachers constantly assumed English was my second language, that I was born in a different country or was a foreign student- I was singled out and othered and excluded by many different staff members because of preconceived notions they placed on me. If you're getting defensive and angry over cultural competency training, maybe it has more to do with your own insecurities and inner biases. Unpack that through therapy instead of trying to take it out on students of color.
