Description of Proposed Guidance Document Changes
The 2020 General Assembly, through House Bill 1680, directed the Virginia Board of Education to review and revise its Career and Technical Education Work-Based Learning Guide (the Guide) to expand the opportunities available for students to earn credit for graduation through high-quality, work-based learning experiences, or in the case of agricultural education, supervised agricultural experiences, in addition to job shadowing, mentorships, internships, and externships. This revision, to be effective on July 1, 2021, expands recognized work-based learning (WBL) experiences from eleven to twelve by adding supervised agricultural experience (SAE). The addition of SAE begins on page 162 of the Guide. Further, the revision includes completing 280 hours of an immersion supervised agricultural experience (SAE) through agricultural education or the entrepreneurship experience will allow students to earn one credit toward graduation in addition to any credit earned through the associated CTE course.
