My 42 yo husband had a total knee replacement and was the recipient of dry needling by his licensed PT.  We use a reputable location that our Ortho strongly recommended.  Had we not received the dry needling there, helping to stretch out his mis-used quadracepts, we would not have done it.  

Having a professional that is informed and trained in how to perform this service was imperative, as  I would not have sought out an acupuncturist to do the same.  Having 2 - 3 people involved in our care, but having to work with another 1 or 2 outside the circle just would have been too difficult.
