As a licensed acupuncturist in California I find it comical that it is even being considered to allow PT's to practice "dry needling" a euphemism for acupuncture, with only 50 hours of training. Even MD's who undoubtably have far more training regarding the functions of the human body have to complete 300+ hrs of training to be able to practice medical acupuncture. Is there something I am missing that could possibly justify allowing PT's to practice quasi acupuncture with <20% of the training hours required of MD's? I was required to complete 3000 hrs of training of which 960 hrs were clinical, supervised by practitioners with many years of experience. Patients will be put at risk of harm by such a low training barrier as is being considered in Virginia.
