Therapists that are entering the work force at this point in time almost exclusively have a doctorate (DPT). They have extensive training in human anatomy and are experts in regards to the musculoskeletal system. They have extensive training in differential diagnoses and know when certain procedures would be unsafe or contraindicated for a patient, dry needling is no different.
One profession cannot own a technique. Both PTs and chiropractors can perform manipulation. Both physicians and physical therapists use stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs. PTs and acupuncturists are both allowed to perform dry needling. If an acupuncturist would like to prescribe exercises to a patient I would have no opposition to this. All of our professions have continuing education courses that teach us new techniques. Physical therapists are in no way trying to say that they are performing acupuncture. Ultimately, we are trying to provide the best care for our patients to help to improve their quality of life.
