Make Facility Regulations Permanent to Protect Women’s Health
Please make the current regulations on abortion centers permanent. No location that conducts potentially life-threatening medical procedures should be immune from inspection or from reasonable and strong facility standards. The women of Virginia deserve permanent protection from no oversight or lack of standards.
I don't believe abortion is "health care;" is a child in a mother's womb a disease? But as long as it remains legal, we should impose regulations. I believe the current regulations are common-sense measures; they simply ensure that life-saving equipment is on hand, infections are prevented, and clear written policies and building guidelines are in place.
I understand that health inspectors have already documented multiple health and safety violations in the facilities and that most of them had to submit plans of correction in order to receive provisional licensure. This alone is evidence that they are required.
Finally, experience in other states has clearly shown that the abortion industry cannot be relied upon to self-regulate or to promote standards of cleanliness and safety in their facilities. In this regard, I would ask every member of the Board to take a few minutes and view this news report (http://3801lancaster.com/) from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is a horror story, and sadly, it is an example of what happens in this terrible trade when no oversight or standards exist.
Again, Virginia's women deserve better. Make these regulations permanent, and ENFORCE them!
