Agency Decision Take no action
Response Date 4/4/2008
Agency Decision Summary The Board decided to retain the requirement for passage of all 3 steps of USMLE for licensure as a doctor of medicine and surgery. The 10-year rule on passage of the three steps of USMLE is less restrictive than most other state boards. Twenty-seven states and the District of Columbia require passage within seven years, two states within five years, ten states allow 10 years for MD/PhD candidates, and five states, including Virginia, allow 10 years for anyone. Six states (FL, KY, LA, NH, NY and WY) have no limit on the years for passage.
