Commenter: Micki Cuppett, Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education

Use of term "Student Athletic Trainer"

As the only accreditor for athletic training educational programs in the U.S., and recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accredation (CHEA), the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) respectfully requests that the board consider using the term "Athletic Training Student" instead of "Student Athletic Trainer"  and "professional programs" in athletic training instead of bachelor's or master's.  This language is more consistent with the language that all accredited athletic training programs are asked to use in their publications and documents.  This terminology is also consistent with the use of the term "student" in other health care professions. The definition suggested by the CAATE is:  "Athletic Training Student" means a person enrolled in a CAATE accredited professional or post-professional athletic training education program.    Please feel free to contact the CAATE if you have questions or concerns.
