the TRAP Regulations

The TRAP regulations have one purpose -- to prevent Virginia's women from obtaining safe abortions. These proposed regulations are part of Governor McDonnell and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's attack on women's reproductive health since they took office. The TRAP regulations are just the latest attempt to treat women as sub-citizens of this state. As such, these proposed regulations would deprive women of full U.S. citizenship under the U.S. Constitution. The purported purpose -- to protect women's health -- is a sham because they will do exactly the opposite by closing medical clinics that not only offer abortions but also provide testing for ovarian cancer and sexually transmitted diseases and a range of other reproductive services. Passing these regulations will further restrict women's health services in the state of Virginia. Women make up half -- or more -- of Virginia's population. We deserve full health services and respect for our personhood under the Constitution. Please do not pass regulations that would take women backwards to the pre-suffrage status of second-class citizens. Virginia has already become a retrogressive state with respect to women's health under the McDonnell/Cuccinelli administration. Respect women, recognize women's right to make their own reproductive choices. Do not pass these TRAP regulations.
