Disqualifying Ballots

During all my years in school from kindergarten through a post-graduate degree, I failed one subject--penmanship.  If you saw my signature, you might think I was still in kindergarten.

Have you ever looked at the signatures of rich and famous people on the internet, of authors, presidents etc.? Have you ever looked at your medical doctor's  signature on a prescription?  Have you ever seen the signature of a war veteran who has lost an arm?

The penmanship of a citizen's signature is certainly not the criterion to use to disqualify absentee ballots.  This is not a gray area. It is as clear as black ink on white paper.  Signatures are sloppy and often illegible for a host of legitmate reasons and illegibility has never been and should never be a criterion for disqualification.  For large periods of this nation's history an 'X' was sufficient.  Penmanship and legibility as criteria will only serve to introduce more arbitrary human judgments into this process. I hope this is not the goal.

Illegibilty should never trigger ineligibilty.

Respectfully,

Timothy Good
